Board Chair

Rev. Sam Chan

Born and raised in Hong Kong. Baptized on December 25, 1958 at Kowloon City Baptist Church, Hong Kong. Was in the computer profession before called to full-time ministry in 1986. Graduated from Regent College with the MCS degree. Ordained on October 13, 1996 at Christ Church of China, Vancouver.  Spent full-time missionary ministry for six years in Europe. Pastored two churches in Vancouver, BC.  After retiring from full-time pastoral ministry, formed the K-PACT Canada Mission Association with some friends with the same vision of reaching out to the unreached people in Indonesia.

Why do you want to be part of the work of theological education at CCST Vancouver?
There is a severe shortage of pastoral workers in the Chinese churches in Canada, particularly the Mandarin-speaking churches. Pastors coming from overseas do not understand the Canadian culture, especially the culture of the second-generation Chinese. Therefore, it is important to train up pastoral workers who are already living in this country, who understand the overseas Chinese churches’ culture. CCST Vancouver is unique in being the only Chinese-speaking theological higher education institute approved by the BC Government to grant graduate degrees to their graduates.

What part of CCST Vancouver ministry are you most excited about and why?
The dedication and unity of the school’s leadership and the family atmosphere of the school community.

Treasurer

Mr. George Lai

CPA, MBA, HKICPA, FCCA

I became a member of the board of CCST Vancouver on January 1, 2024, and I currently serve as the Treasurer of the School.

I am a Chartered Professional Accountant and have been managing my own public accounting practice since 2000. Before starting my accounting practice, I worked as the Finance Manager at the technology transfer office at the University of British Columbia for a decade.

In addition to my CPA designation, I hold accounting certifications from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants in the UK and the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants. I also earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the City University of Macau (formerly known as the University of East Asia).

Before my family of four immigrated to Canada, I had the opportunity to work in large corporations such as Cathay Pacific Airways and Hong Kong Telecom, where I became accustomed to working within complex, organized, and systematic procedures. My last position at Hong Kong Telecom was Assistant Treasurer, where I managed the company’s cash flow and funds. These experiences contrast greatly with my later work in small businesses, charitable organizations, and universities in Canada. Together, these experiences have broadened my perspective and helped me better navigate and manage issues arising from different organizational environments.

I have been a Christian since 2000 and have actively served in the church I attend, holding various roles such as treasurer, chairperson of worship, Sunday school teacher, small group leader, ALPHA desk leader, and member of the caring team.

In my free time, I enjoy reading, watching sports events, brisk walking, and playing tennis and pickleball.

Secretary

Mr. Eugene Li

Born and raised in Hong Kong, I have had the privilege of being educated in Hong Kong, Canada, the USA, and the UK. My transformative year in Winnipeg led me to embrace my faith in the Lord, and since then, I have trusted Him to guide my studies, career, marriage, and health. In this increasingly distorted world, I am passionate about helping build blameless and pure servants of God. As a former international student, I deeply understand the challenges they face and feel blessed to be part of the CARE committee in CCST Vancouver, where I contribute to supporting international students. As a professional statistician, I also hope to assist students with quantitative analysis in their theses, applying my skills to make a positive impact.

Rev. Edwin Tsang

Rev. Edwin Tsang graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1978. A year later, he returned to Hong Kong and worked as an engineer at the Ma On Shan Quarry. During a winter retreat in 1976, Rev. Tsang dedicated himself to full-time ministry. Therefore, shortly after beginning his engineering career, he left his job to devote himself to Chinese gospel ministry.

In October 1979, he joined the Far East Broadcasting Company (FEBC) in Hong Kong as a full-time staff member, while also pursuing theological studies at the China Graduate School of Theology. In 1980, he immigrated to Canada and worked in a computer company until 1984. Later, as FEBC Hong Kong expanded its ministry to North America, Rev. Tsang resigned from his computer position and, together with Rev. Leung Shu-wing, launched the FEBC Canada Chinese Ministry Department, producing gospel radio programs to share the Good News with people in mainland China. In 1995, he became the Director of the Chinese Department of FEBC Canada.

Responding to the needs of local churches, Rev. Tsang has also served as Acting Senior Pastor of Vancouver Fountain Alliance Church and later as a volunteer pastor at North Richmond Alliance Church. On January 1, 2010, he began serving as the volunteer Senior Pastor of the newly established Richmond Capstan Alliance Church. He continues to serve faithfully as Director of the Chinese Department at FEBC Canada.

Rev. Yiu Tong Chan

DipCS, MDiv(Regent College)
BTh(Evangel College)
Librarianship Certificate(HKU)

I obtained a library management certificate from the University of Hong Kong, graduated from Hong Kong Baptist Theological Seminary, and Regent College in Vancouver, Canada. I also studied pastoral theology and Biblical geography at Fuller Theological Seminary in the USA and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel, respectively. I served as the Senior Pastor in Vancouver, Canada for nearly 30 years and am currently the Dean of Students at CCST Vancouver.

Over the years, I have served as the chair of the Greater Vancouver Pastoral Fellowship, a board member of CCCOWE (Canada West and World Chinese Christian Overseas Evangelism), and a board member of the Theological Seminary and Short-Term Mission Center. I am also an experienced lecturer in Biblical geography and have led pilgrimage tours to the Holy Land. In 2010, I was awarded a certificate of commendation by the Israel Ministry of Tourism. From 2009 to 2019, I taught courses in Biblical history and geography, as well as spiritual growth at William Carey Theological Seminary in Vancouver and the Vancouver Short-Term Mission Center. I also served as a spiritual mentor in spiritual formation courses at William Carey Theological Seminary and ACTS Seminary in Canada for many years. I have translated the "Nelson’s 3-D Bible Map Book" and compiled several guides, including the "Holy Land Pilgrimage Guide" (in Chinese and English), and the "Apostle's Footsteps and Seven Churches Pilgrimage Guide," both nearing 200 pages.

After nearly 30 years of pastoral ministry in Canada, transitioning to mentoring seminary students after retirement has been an extra grace from God in my life. CCST Vancouver is not unfamiliar to me. Reflecting on the first day of its establishment, I have been blessed by the Lord to participate from the preparation stage to being a board member, and now as a semi-volunteer staff member. Throughout this journey, I have personally witnessed and experienced God's marvelous works in establishing the seminary, achieving great things, and making the impossible possible. I am truly grateful, and those who trust in Him are indeed blessed.

On a personal note, I enjoy music, visual arts, painting, reading, nature, history, geography, and collecting beautiful stones. One of the most enriching and encouraging ministries I've been part of is leading deep pilgrimages to the Holy Land with brothers, sisters, and pastors from different churches. Over the past decade, by God's grace, I have shared topics on spiritual growth from the Holy Land to the Bible at churches and winter retreats in North America, Hong Kong, and Mainland China, receiving very positive and encouraging feedback. As for my family, three years ago, I was blessed to become a grandfather, and I thank God for this blessing.

Rev. Alvin Poon

Bachelor degree in Religious Studies, University of Calgary(1985). MDIV degree, Canadian Theological Seminary(1991).  Senior Pastor, Burnaby Alliance Church

I was born in Hong Kong and accepted Christ at the age of 11. In 1976, I immigrated to Canada and pursued my post-secondary education in Calgary. In 1981, I felt the call to full-time ministry, and in 1988, I received theological training. My first ministry was at Edmonton Chinese Alliance Church, where I served from 1991 to 1995. Since 1995, I have been serving at Burnaby Alliance Church.

Over the years, God has granted me numerous opportunities to serve as a committee member and board director for several theological seminaries. I have always felt a deep burden to support theological training. I clearly see how CCST is being powerfully used by God to train His servants and advance His Kingdom. The rapid growth of CCST stands as a testament to God’s blessings. In just a few years, CCST acquired its own building, and its growth has been steady. I can see that students not only enjoy their training but also experience a strong sense of community among the students and faculty. They receive substantial support throughout their studies and continue to be supported even after graduation, particularly when facing challenges in ministry.

Rev. Dr. David Cheung

Ph.D., University of London (UK)
President Emeritus, Asian Theological Seminary
Retired pastor

I have lived in Hong Kong, Manila, the UK, the US, and Canada. My mother led me to dedicate my life to the Lord’s work when I was about four years old, and in third grade, I made the same commitment independently during a kids’ summer camp.

I enjoy preaching, teaching, writing, and studying theology, Biblical studies, and church history. I also have a love for dim sum, fish & chips, pork radish soup, adobo, guitar music, and close-up magic.

I have been involved in theological education since 1988, in Asia, Europe, and North America. As a theological lecturer, I have taught courses in New Testament studies, church history, preaching, and Christian ethics. In my role as an educational administrator, I’ve served as an academic dean and as a seminary president.
